The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in September and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
