EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
