Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then found many other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any injuries in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have requested to the public for tips.
A high-ranking political figure stated the incident left him speechless and required to be resolved promptly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
